This year’s Miami-Dade County League of Cities back to school donation event took place in Homestead’s Laura C. Saunders Elementary. Dozens of local underprivileged students received book bags, lunchboxes and other assorted school supplies that were collected by the Miami-Dade County League of Cities for the 4th Annual Back to School Drive.
Councilman Jon Burgess, serving as Vice President of the MDCLC along with President, Village of Pinecrest Mayor Cindy Lerner, had this to say. “Since it was first established, the League of Cities has always sought to pursue one purpose and that is to unite the common interests of the municipalities within Miami-Dade County. It is and will always be in our collective interest to foster and care for our young people and to give them an education so that when it comes time for them to assume positions of responsibility, they will be ready. This kind of event helps achieve those goals.”
Many other community leaders were in attendance including Homestead Mayor Jeff Porter, MDCLC Executive Director Richard Kuper, MDCPS South Region Superintendent Ms. Barbara Mendizábal, Principal of Laura C. Saunders Elementary School Ms. Barbara Leveille-Brown, Assistant Principal of Laura C. Saunders Elementary School Jamila Beckford, Florida City Commissioner Sharon Butler-Smith also in charge of Volunteer/Parent Outreach at Laura C.
