[ARCHIVED] Councilman Elvis Maldonado Recognizes Achievements of Homestead Relay for Life 2014

Councilman Elvis Maldonado addressed the chamber during May’s Special Council Presentation to acknowledge the outstanding fundraising efforts conducted by those involved in this year’s Homestead Relay for Life, which raised over $56,000 for the American Cancer Society.

“I had the distinct pleasure of serving as Honorary Chair for Homestead Relay for Life 2014,” said the councilman. “Tonight, I would like to recognize ‘Team City of Homestead’ led by the phenomenal efforts of Event Chair Teri Weinstein, Councilwoman Judy Waldman, Michael Hitt and the Homestead Police Department. They did a great job of bringing the community together, and leading the way with their tremendous fundraising efforts, which not only included the successful Relay for Life event but also the Highway Holdup and the Jail & Bail event”

Relay for Life is a community based fundraising event of the American Cancer Society. Today, more than 5,000 Relay for Life events take place across twenty countries. Events are held in local communities, campus universities and in virtual worlds. As the American Cancer Society's most successful fundraiser and the organization's signature event, the mission of Relay For Life is to raise funds to improve cancer survival, decrease the incidence of cancer, and improve the quality of life for cancer patients and their caretakers.

“It was my honor to serve as Event Chair,” said Ms. Weinstein, “We estimated that over 800 people participated this year from team members to community members. When we met with the American Cancer Society last October, they wanted to set a goal of $25,000. We thought we could do better, so we doubled that goal. As of today, I am proud to announce that not only did we meet our goal but exceeded it as the total monies raised topped out at over $56,000. I would like to thank all involved for their commitment and generous support.”

Councilman Maldonado also awarded a Certificate of Appreciation to Somerset SOHO 10th grader Brianna Powell for winning the t-shirt design contest for this year’s Homestead Relay for Life event.
