The act of speaking in public is not what most people look forward to; much less enter a competition to prove their oration skills. So when Councilwoman Patricia Fairclough heard that Mike Babst of Homestead’s Toastmaster won the Best Speaker at the Division Level Humorous Speech and Evaluation competition she wanted to bring this accomplishment to the public light.
“The City of Homestead salutes Mike Babst for his achievement and awards him a Certificate of Recognition. You make Homestead proud!” said Councilwoman Fairclough-McCormick at the September Special Presentation section of the Homestead City Council meeting. “I have had the privilege of attending Toastmasters in Homestead myself and am proud of the work that they do in helping improve the communication and leadership skills of the community.”
Homestead’s local chapter of Toastmasters International seeks to assist its members in improving their speaking skills and to become a good leader at the same time by providing a safe environment for members to give helpful advice. They use a learning-by-doing workshop format at each meeting where participants hone their speaking and leadership skills.
