[ARCHIVED] Councilman Jimmie Williams Recognizes PAL of Homestead and AAU National Primary Championship Winners

In a commitment to bring to light positive individuals within the City of Homestead and the Southwest community, Councilman Jimmie L. Williams, III recognized the Police Athletic League (PAL) and local winners of the AAU Primary National Championship.

“Today we honor coaches and athletes for their leadership, commitment and dedication to the ideals of PAL of Homestead and more importantly for making their City and community proud,” said Councilman Williams. “The City and I are honored to recognize their achievement and the great job they did in representing the City of Homestead. These coaches and young athletes are truly positive role models for others in the community.”

During a special presentation of the July Homestead City Council meeting, Officer Tyrone Edwards and PAL received a certificate for their leadership and selfless allegiance in coaching the young athletes who competed in the AAU Primary National Championships in Kissimmee, Florida this past July. Also recognized and awarded with certificates for exhibiting the qualities of leadership, commitment and dedication were the young athletes, which competed in the AAU Primary National Championship Track and Field competition. The following athletes received certificates for their outstanding achievement: Cortney Vega, who won first place in the 100, 200 and 400-meter dash, and is the top 7yr old in her division; winning first place also qualified her to go to Detroit, MI for the 2013 AAU Junior Olympic Games. Also honored were Nathanial Charles placed 19th overall in the Triathlon, La’Darius Jones placed 5th place in the 55-meter dash and 6th place in the 100-meter dash, and is the top 6 year old in his division, and Jayden Sanders placed 9th in the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash.

The Homestead Police Athletic League (PAL) is a youth crime prevention program geared toward involving youth in athletics and academics. The PAL operates out of the Chief Curtis K. Ivy PAL Gymnasium located at 600 Southwest 14 Avenue, which is in the southwest section of Homestead.
