Homestead Hospital Baptist Health was recognized and honored by Councilwoman Judy Waldman during a special presentation of the June 19 Homestead City Council meeting after being named one of America’s safest hospitals in the April/May 2013 issue of AARP Magazine.
“I am proud to recognize Homestead Hospital. Their outstanding efforts have made their hospital one of the nation’s safest receiving the recognition they so richly deserve,” said Councilwoman Waldman during the award presentation. “I can speak from personal experience when I say the administration, the doctors and the nursing staff really do care for their patients. Their efforts have brought positive attention to the City of Homestead and that is something to be proud of.”
Homestead Hospital was featured in the April/May 2013 issue of AARP Magazine as one of the “Top Hospitals for Safety” and one of only 66 hospitals in the United States to receive the honor. Homestead Hospital received a very high score, specifically a superstar rating for nursing quality. “Nurses at Homestead Hospital make regular rounds so they can anticipate patients’ needs, rather than waiting to respond to a frantic call button. That prevents patients from trying to get out of the bed to go to the toilet by themselves,” said Gail Gordon, RN, Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer of Homestead Hospital on AARP Magazine article. According to the magazine, answering nature’s call is a major reason for hospital falls, which affect up to 15 percent of patients and result in serious injury 30 percent of the time.
Homestead Hospital has been a part of the south Miami-Dade community since 1940, when local physician James Archer Smith opened it as a 10-bed hospital east of Krome Avenue. Today, Homestead Hospital Health South is a modern full-service 142-bed facility. With state-of-the-art, resources and a patient-centered focus, combined with high levels of patient and physician satisfaction, which has earned them a number of industry awards for clinical, service and operational excellence, including many appearances in Fortune 500 magazine.
