Just days before thousands of students will fill its halls, Miami Dade College Homestead Campus and the City of Homestead celebrated the grand opening of the Student Success Center. The new, modern facility serves as a connection between Downtown Homestead and the MDC Homestead Campus serving both the student and business communities.
Dozens of community members and dignitaries gathered on the morning of August 15, 2023, to cut the ribbon on the new facility. Prior to the opening, MDC President Madeline Pumariega, Provost Dr. Malou Harrison, MDC Homestead Campus President Dr. Oscar Loynaz, and Mayor Steven D. Losner spoke about the profound significance of the new building for Miami Dade College's trajectory, its students, and the local Homestead community.
“This building is not only an important resource for our community but continues to further the goal of making Homestead the destination,” remarked Mayor Losner. “It is a great addition to the city and we are proud to have MDC as our neighbor.”
The Student Success Center is the result of a partnership between Miami Dade College and the City of Homestead in which the City gifted land for the purpose of creating this new hub for a myriad of essential services. The first and second floors will be home to admissions and registration, financial aid, advisement, the Honors College, and student services. The third floor will accommodate entrepreneurial programming catering specifically to the small business community, with a specialized focus on entrepreneurship, economic and community development, and the goal of enabling students to obtain workforce and business skills necessary to succeed in the job market. The fourth floor will be a dedicated conference space complemented by an art gallery to showcase student, faculty, and local artists’ exhibits.
The MDC Student Success Center is part of an overall vision to revitalize Downtown Homestead. Other completed projects include the City Hall, Police Headquarters, Seminole Theatre, Cybrarium, Losner Park, and Homestead Station transit and entertainment center.
