During the month of February, the nation recognizes and acknowledges the accomplishments of those in the African American community. The year 2020 has been correlated to a time of clear vision, and no one had a better foresight to our nation’s civil relations than Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. On Thursday, February 27, 2020, Vice Mayor Patricia Fairclough- Staggers and the Homestead Mayor’s Youth Council will host an Art Gala in honor of Dr. Martin L. King, Jr. in conjunction with the Friends of the Historic Seminole Theatre. During the gala, Homestead’s Mayor’s Youth Council will be presenting the winners of their MLK Art Contest.
“Darkness cannot not drive out darkness, only light can do that; Hate cannot drive out hate, only Love can do that,” this quote from Dr. King during his 1957 speech to a congregation at Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama, served as inspiration for the contest. Students submitted an orginal art piece that interpreted the quote along with a 500 essay explanation of the art.
The Art Gala is free and open to the public, but an RSVP is requested at www.cityofhomestead.com/mycgalanight.
