The Homestead Mayor’s Youth Council Presents the Martin Luther King Jr. Art Competition and Gala!


Join the Mayor’s Youth Council on Thursday, February 20, 2020 for the gallery night and award ceremony at Seminole Theatre at 18 N. Krome Ave., Homestead, Florida 33030.


Students from public, private, and charter schools in Homestead from grades 4 through 12 are invited to participate. The contest will be the artist’s representation of the above-mentioned quote by Martin Luther King Jr. Entries are required to be submitted to Homestead City Hall (100 Civic Court, 3rd Floor, Homestead, FL 33030) by Friday, January 31. There will then be an exhibition on Thursday, February 20th, featuring all of the entries followed by an award ceremony for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each category at the Homestead Seminole Theatre. Winners will be awarded a trophy and their schools will be provided with a certificate. The categories will be 4th, 5th grade for elementary; 6th, 7th, and 8th grade for middle school; and 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th grade for high school. When submitting the art piece be sure to follow the guidelines:


•Max of 1 submission per grade level per school

•The art piece must be no smaller than 16’’ by 20’’

•Be sure to attach the school name, grade level, artists full name to the piece before submitting to City Hall, (*note no more than a group of 3 artists per piece)

•Entries are to be accompanied by a reflection essay of the quote which explain the student’s interpretation of the quote as projected by the painting. The essay has a word limit of 500 words and must not exceed this word count. The judging of the entries will be based on both the art entry and essay entry.

•Submissions must be completely done by the students and no professional help may be given
