[ARCHIVED] Vice Mayor Burgess Recognizes Youth Soccer in Homestead & the AYSO Region 805 Board

Burgess AYSO Recognition

Following the AYSO (American Youth Soccer Organization) State Games held in West Palm Beach in January, Vice Mayor Jon Burgess recognized the accomplishments of AYSO Region 805 at the City Council Presentations on March 20th, including both its board and its teams.

Vice Mayor Burgess began his presentation by recognizing the growth of youth soccer programming in Homestead, saying, “AYSO has been rejuvenated here in Homestead. We’ve grown from a fall season to two seasons, with upwards of 600 kids coming out in the fall. It’s a great thing to see our youth come out and enjoy a sport and camaraderie and to show their skills in what they love to do.”

He continued, “But all this would not be done without the backing from people on the AYSO Region 805 Board. These are the people that make it happen each and every week for these kids and put in hundreds and hundreds of hours throughout the season and year. They do a great job for us — bringing us this league, turning it around, making it so strong and doing two seasons instead of one.”

Vice Mayor Burgess then presented each board member with a certificate of appreciation for their contributions, including a special framed collage for Sam De La Rosa and Monica De La Rosa for their outstanding leadership and contributions to the region’s success.

Other board members honored included: Noe Jimenez, Elizabeth Stige, Sharon Hellriegel, Abram Jimenez, Lonny Allen and Kim Allen.

Sam De La Rosa commented, “What this is really about is the teams that went out and represented our city. We’re very proud to do this. We look forward to continuing the great relationship with the city — helping us improve our field conditions and with whatever we need.” He also thanked all the parents and volunteer coaches.

Next, Vice Mayor Burgess recognized the three teams who all won second place awards at the State Games. As he recognized all of the individual team members, he said to each group, “We appreciate you representing Homestead in such a great way, adding for the larger audience present, “And now, they know what it is to win, so next year, I’m sure they’ll win first place.”

Following the presentation to the 16U Boys Team, Coach Noe Jimenez noted, “I’m very proud of this group. They were actually playing on a 19 level and were two years younger than the rest of the division and were the last U16 group standing.”

Vice Mayor Burgess concluded the presentation, “Congratulations, everyone! Job well done!”

The AYSO is the oldest national youth soccer program in the United States. It started from humble beginnings with only nine teams and a handful of soccer enthusiasts in 1964. AYSO has grown to a non-profit organization that provides youth soccer programs for participants all over the United States and internationally in the Virgin Islands and Trinidad and Tobago. Consisting of over 50,000 teams and 500,000 players nationwide, AYSO is one of the leading youth soccer organizations in the world.

AYSO Region 805 has continued to grow and offer its membership relevant programs to the communities of Cutler Bay, Homestead, Florida City and the Redlands. Today, Region 805 has more than 60 teams and grown to more than 600 youth, between the ages 4-18.
