Councilwoman Fairclough Recognizes the First Graders at First United Methodist Christian School

During the February 20th Special Council presentations, Councilwoman Patricia Fairclough opened her presentation, saying, “We have lots of kids in the audience. . .that makes my heart smile. We are here with our first graders from First United Methodist Christian School [FUMCS]!”

Annually, the first graders at FUMCS read “Roxaboxen,” a well-known book written by Alice McLerran and illustrated by Barbara Cooney. The book, which celebrates the imagination of children who, no matter the time or place, can create whole worlds out of what they find around them — in this case, rocks and boxes — also creates a unique opportunity for the students to learn about what makes a community a community.

Councilwoman Fairclough explained, “It’s an honor for me to continue the tradition of acknowledging these students their entrepreneurial spirit in creating community — the community of Roxaboxen.” She then showed a PowerPoint presentation, “to give you a small glimpse of the community these students created” and clicked through adorable photographs of each student and their ingenious pretend businesses — from a donut shop to a dentist’s office to a fire station.

The students/entrepreneurs from Mrs. Kenney’s and Mrs. Zelaya’s classes energetically came to the front of the Council Chambers to join Councilwoman Fairclough and their teachers. There was a chef, a doctor, an artist, a dentist and many others. Councilwoman Fairclough presented each one with a certificate of recognition for his or her part in creating the community of Roxaboxen.
