[ARCHIVED] Councilman Elvis Maldonado Named Honorary Chair for Homestead Relay for Life 2013

At a special presentation of the February Homestead City Council meeting, Relay For Life Representative Yvette Ortiz presented Councilman Elvis R. Maldonado with a plaque naming him this year’s Honorary Chair of the Homestead / Florida City Relay For Life event.

“As many of you know, unfortunately, last year I lost my wife to Cancer. During our battle, it was very comforting to know we had the American Cancer Society community behind us,” said Councilman Elvis Maldonado upon receiving the plaque. “It is going to be my life’s work to honor my wife, and bring awareness to this illness that has affected so many of us. We must help them raise the necessary funds to continue their important work.”

The Relay for Life is an event of the American Cancer Society where communities come together to honor and celebrate survivors, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against a disease that has already taken to many lives. The Relay is an organized overnight community fundraising walk where teams of people gather around the track for eighteen hours straight. Team members take turns walking around the track to raise funds for Cancer research. Food, games, and activities provide entertainment and camaraderie in this family oriented environment. The journey to end Cancer begins with one single step and the American Cancer Society invites you to take that step with us, by joining the global relay for life movement.

This year’s Homestead and Florida City Community Relay for Life event will be held on May 17th at the Homestead Baptist Hospital, located at 975 Baptist Way Homestead, Florida 33033, beginning at 5pm and will end the next day.

“May is quickly approaching and we need to raise $35,000 here in Homestead so that the American Cancer Society can continue their mission,” said Councilman Maldonado. “The only way that is going to happen is by building teams within our communities, teams within our businesses, teams within our civic center, and teams within our government. We need to get everyone on board to fight this fight!”
