The Homestead Mayor’s Youth Council has once again demonstrated its superior commitment to serving the Homestead community. The group won second place for their Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service in the 2018 Municipal Youth Council Community Service Contest, sponsored by the Florida League of Cities (FLC). The contest showcases community service projects performed by Municipal Youth Councils that successfully address specific needs in their local communities.
“The Mayor’s Youth Council members are truly Homestead’s best and brightest,” said Councilwoman Patricia Fairclough, liaison to the Mayor’s Youth Council. "While others used the holiday for a day off, we used the day to put in some extra hours giving back to the community—showing everyone that the future of Homestead is in great hands.”
Homestead’s winning entry detailed their project to rehabilitate the home of Juanita Williams, the oldest living member of the City’s Southwest District. The Youth Council undertook the project alongside multiple community groups on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in an effort to commemorate the life and legacy of the great civil rights leader.
“We were so grateful for the opportunity of being able to give back and hope the cycle of doing good deeds continues in our community,” said Youth Council Mayor Anthony Garcia. “Not just with our youth council, but with other groups and organizations here in the Homestead community.”
The Homestead Mayor’s Youth Council and other contest winners will receive a trophy, be recognized at the FLC Annual Conference, be featured in Quality Cities magazine, and have their projects featured on FLC’s website and social media accounts. Founded in 1922, the Florida League of Cities is the united voice for Florida’s municipal governments. Its goals are to promote local self-government and serve the needs of Florida’s cities. Information on the winning projects is available online at www.flcities.com/YCPhotoWinners.
The purpose of the Homestead Mayor’s Youth Council is to complement academic studies by increasing the students’ knowledge, voice, communication, and involving them in practical hands on experiences to promote volunteerism among both youth and adults in civic education and affairs.
