More than a thousand people gathered to celebrate the first new commercial development in Downtown Homestead in decades. The event marked the start of construction on Homestead Station, a major development that will feature a Showbiz Cinemas family entertainment center including movies, bowling, video arcade, transit center, and parking garage.
People of all ages gathered on the future site of Homestead Station while iconic movie clips and soundtracks played. As the sun began to set, a parade of construction equipment led by the Homestead Police Department made their way onto the site while “The Greatest Show” played and 15-foot plumes of fire erupted. Once the heavy equipment reached its final destination, the program continued with a video showcasing the new amenities and services soon to be available at Homestead Station. Next, the Mayor and City Council proclaimed the official start of construction.
With that, the backhoe sprang to life, dumping the first shovel of dirt. As construction officially started, it was time to celebrate. A tribute to film—showcasing iconic movies from every genre and time period—led into an epic fireworks display synced to blockbuster movie soundtracks like Star Wars, James Bond, and Back to the Future.
Homestead Station is part of an overall effort to revitalize Downtown Homestead. Other recent projects include the restored Seminole Theatre, new City Hall, and new Police Headquarters.
