After 100 years of proudly serving Homestead residents, Homestead Public Services Energy opened its doors for a community celebration welcoming the next 100 years of community power. More than 100 attendees enjoyed electrical demonstrations, power plant tours, and kids’ activities throughout the afternoon.
Kids and adults alike were delighted by the high-flying feats of the HPS Energy Line Crew, who showed off the skills they use every day in repairing and maintaining the City of Homestead’s electrical infrastructure. The crowd also enjoyed informative power plant tours, which showcased the equipment used to generate Homestead’s power and allowed residents an exclusive peek inside HPS operations.
There was plenty of family-friendly fun with inflatable slides, bounce houses, and face painting. Plus, a fun and funky photo booth let visitors take home a piece of history. During a brief program, Homestead’s Mayor & Council, City Staff, and other elected officials talked about the history and future of HPS as they look forward to another century of serving the Homestead community.
Since 1916, HPS has been a true pioneer in energy services. At one time, large power companies did not realize the benefit of extending their services to the City of Homestead. So, residents and leaders decided to take matters into their own hands to create Homestead Public Services. The first power plant was a humble beginning with only one generator, but as demand grew HPS expanded and was at one time among the largest municipal diesel-power plants in the entire United States.
