October 27, 2016—In a press conference hosted at the newly revitalized Seminole Theatre, the City of Homestead, joined by Congressman Curbelo, announced the final funding needed to begin a major project in Downtown Homestead, which is central to the City’s revitalization effort. The project will include a Downtown Transit Center with a 1,000 space parking garage, a multi-screen movie theater, bowling alley, restaurant, and retail.
More than $7 million in unused Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) earmarks will be repurposed for the Downtown Transit Center. The repurposing of the FDOT earmarks is thanks to efforts by the City of Homestead and Congressman Curbleo following the US Consolidated Appropriations Act 2016, which gives states the option of repurposing certain earmarked funds to improve infrastructure, foster innovation, and create access to opportunity.
The City is currently in the midst of an aggressive Downtown Revitalization effort. Recent projects include the newly constructed City Hall, recently restored historic Seminole Theatre, and the new Police Station expected to be completed by early 2017.
