[ARCHIVED] Vice Mayor Fairclough Recognizes the Mayor’s Youth Council Graduating Class

A commencement ceremony was held during the June Council Presentations for some very special high school seniors. Donning their graduation caps, five members of the Mayor’s Youth Council received certificates of recognition from Vice Mayor Patricia Fairclough, who serves as liaison and mentor to the Mayor’s Youth Council.

“They have faithfully and dutifully served the City of Homestead, giving their time, their talent, their treasures,” she warmly addressed them. “You have a lot of support in this community, your family and your friends. But anything that you need to succeed is not just around you, it is within you. So use your wisdom to change the world. All the best to you!”

The 2016 graduates of the Mayor’s Youth Council are:

Yavin Bizarretty, who has been on the council for 4 years. She graduated from M.A.S.T at Homestead and will be attending USF to major in Cell and Molecular Biology.

Alydn Edwards has been on the council for 3 years. She graduated from South Dade Senior High School and will be attending UCF to major in International Global Studies.

Melissa Hurtado has been on the council for 1 year. She graduated from Keys Gate Charter High School and will be attending Miami Dade College to pursue a major in Chemistry.

Marco O’Campo, who is the outgoing Mayor of the council, has served for 3 years. He graduated from M.A.S.T at Homestead and will be attending UCF to double major in Biology and Pre-Med.

Antuanet Rivera, “the Comeback Kid” as known to Vice Mayor Fairclough, has been on the council for 1 year. She graduated from Arthur and Polly Mays Conservatory of the Arts and will be attending UCF, majoring in Corporate Law.

The purpose of the Mayor’s Youth Council is to complement academic studies by increasing the students’ knowledge, voice, communication, and involving them in practical hands-on experiences to promote volunteerism among both youth and adults in civic education and affairs.
