[ARCHIVED] Vice Mayor Fairclough Recognizes the Dream Team at Miami-Dade College Homestead

You’ve heard of basketball, football, and soccer “dream teams,” but the team making headlines in Homestead is the community service organization called the Dream Team at Miami-Dade College Homestead. During the May Council Presentations, Vice Mayor Fairclough recognized the Dream Team for their positive impact in the community.

DREAM TEAM is a student organization founded by the local scholarship recipients of the American Dream Scholarship for High Performing High School Graduates. The Dream Team at MDC Homestead began its mission in 2013 and was made up of students who wanted to give back to the community that was so generous in funding and supporting their continuing education. Now, the Dream Team also includes other MDC students who want to be involved in community service.

“I am honored to be standing next to these very talented students who have the heart to serve. I have worked with them at many Homestead events and they are always willing and able to help,” said Vice Mayor Fairclough. “On behalf of the Mayor and Council, I present this plaque to you all with a well-deserved “Thank You.’”

Since 2013, the Dream Team has raised over $8000 for various charities and provided a total of over 5,000 service hours through its 67 members, five of whom have been named statewide “Student of the Month.” In addition, the Dream Team will receive national attention when receiving the President’s Volunteer Service Award for the third year in a row this June.

The Dream Team has helped many local organizations in its short history, including South Dade Migrant Camp and Title 1 Migrant Education, Project SOS, Day of the Young Child, Greater Miami Youth for Christ, Homestead Soup Kitchen and Homestead Food Pantry, 100 Black Men of South Florida, Chapman Partnership for the Homeless, Everglades National Park, and Coastal Clean-up.
