Councilman Stephen R. Shelley continues to highlight and recognize talented artists within our community through his Artist in the Spotlight Series. At the April 20th presentation, Councilman Shelley introduced another local talent, photographer Sandy DeWitt.
Ms. Dewitt has an extensive career in photography that has included images in the field of architecture, design, and construction. She has won numerous awards including Best of Show and the Court of Honor Award. Her style of photography presents clean and crisp imaging and reflects an understanding of the fluidness between function and design.
“We are proud to have the Artist in the Spotlight series remain strong after five continuous years of showcasing our local artists, photographers, and mixed media talent.” Councilman Stephen R. Shelley remarked before presenting Ms. DeWitt. “The artist we’re about to hear from has shown not only a prodigious talent, but an admirable commitment to quality and perfection.
During the presentation, Ms. Dewitt featured a photograph entitled The Deering Keyhole, which was produced over five years with the cooperation of the Deering Estate. This and other photographs will be featured at her exhibition and open house at the Community Center on Friday, May 13th from 6-8 pm.
Ms. DeWitt’s passion for photography began at an early age, when her father gave her first camera and then being influenced by pioneers in the field of photography by the likes of Ansel Adams, Pedro Guerrero, and Julius Shulman. She went on to attend and study at the prestigious Rhode Island School of Photography, where she graduated fourth in her class.
Ms. DeWitt lives in South Florida with her husband. While shooting projects worldwide, supporting community outreach for education and organizing photographic working societies focused on the exploration of architecture, she is also working on her personal project; Urban Decay: Tyranny. It sets to explore the relationship between the tyranny of aging and urban spaces. To see more of Ms. DeWitt’s work, please visit www.sandydewitt.com.
