[ARCHIVED] Homestead Hosts Annual Race to the 4th Independence Day Bash

Back for its 6th year, the Race to the 4th proved yet again to be the crowning event of the summer. With over 20,000 people in attendance, the Homestead-Miami Speedway was a sea of reds, whites, and blues as people from all over South Florida came to show their American pride.

Attendees enjoyed live music, children’s rides and activities, food, and drinks. Local staple Main Highway provided classic rock ‘n’ roll sounds, while Ricky Valido brought hometown country stylings. Among those enjoying the festivities were Homestead’s Mayor & Council, as well as several visiting dignitaries. For anyone with an empty stomach, a plethora of food trucks were on hand offering a variety of tasty summer treats along with refreshing beverages to wash it all down. Kids had plenty to occupy themselves with including midway style amusement rides, and rock walls to climb.

“The Race to the 4th isn’t just about a celebration,” said Councilwoman Judy Waldman, who has spearheaded this event for six years as the Chair of the Parks & Recreation Department. “It’s about remembering those who have fought for our freedom and everything that makes America great.”

The Champions Club, which offers a preferred view of the epic fireworks display from above, played host to the “Party in the USA” VIP event. Hundreds gathered to eat, laugh, and dance the night away while brother-sister team BNS Entertainment rocked the house. Novice and expert dancers also enjoyed a special line dancing tutorial. In the first ever pie eating contest at the Race to the 4th, a champion was crowned after five minutes of grueling competition. The crowd cheered as the contestants dove face-first into cherry pies topped with a generous helping of whipped cream.

Of course, no 4th of July celebration would be complete without a fireworks display. This salute to all things America culminated with the best fireworks show in South Florida. A full 30 minutes of fireworks set to patriotic tunes made this pyrotechnic display was a stunning tribute to American Independence—inspiring pride in attendees young and old.
