The Biscayne-Everglades Greenway Bike Festival came back strong for the sixth year running with over 200 bicycle and nature enthusiasts gathering for the ride on the morning of Sunday, March 22, 2015. This year, cyclists enjoyed the option of a fun 11-mile loop to Biscayne National Park or a challenging 42-mile ride to Everglades and Biscayne National Parks.
Since its inception, this free event has become a staple for bicyclists and nature lovers alike—offering the chance to connect with nature while promoting fitness and bicycle safety. As riders returned, they had the chance to appreciate a Sunday spent outdoors with friends while eating and drinking heartily at the Homestead-Miami Speedway.
“Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful day with me,” said Councilwoman Judy Waldman during her opening remarks at the Festival. “The support you have all shown for the Greenway makes it so clear that this project is worth it and I look forward to being able to ride the full trail with you one day soon.”
The trail followed by the cyclists, known as the Biscayne-Everglades Greenway, is the vision of City of Homestead Councilwoman Judy Waldman, which seeks to offer a safe and scenic route to the parks without concern for vehicular traffic. The Biscayne-Everglades Greenway is a collaboration among AIA Miami, the Miami-Dade County Parks and Recreation Department, Biscayne and Everglades National Parks, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection Office of Greenways and Trails, the City of Homestead, and the NPS Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance Program, among many others.
