Mayor Jeff Porter honored Maritime Safety and Security Team 91114 by proclaiming November 7, 2014 to be Maritime Safety and Security Team (MSST) 91114 Day. MSST 91114 is an active duty United States Coast Guard unit established in 2004 to guard our nation’s ports, maritime facilities, and waterways.

“We here in Homestead are so grateful to MSST 91114 for their professionalism, bravery, and dedicated service,” said Mayor Porter. “They provide valuable services to our community and to our nation.” The members of MSST 9114 are on the front lines of detecting, deterring, and disrupting threats across the maritime domain in order to protect America’s infrastructure and citizens both locally and internationally. They are tasked with the same mandate as the United States Coast Guard—to safeguard the maritime interests and environment of the United States of America by providing an adaptable, responsive military force of maritime professionals.
Being assigned to the Commander Coast Guard Miami Area, MSST 91114 responsible for protecting such interests as Biscayne Bay, PortMiami, and Port Everglades. Over 2,500 vessels, 7.42 million tons of cargo, and $94.7 million of revenue are annually accounted for in PortMiami alone. MSST 91114 uniquely possesses the knowledge and expertise necessary to perform port security and harbor defense operations for this vast array of assets.
MSST 91114 has at any time over 70 active duty personnel fully operational that can be reinforced by 20 reserve personnel and contributes over 1.8 million dollars to the South Florida economy annually.
