Jon Burgess was re-elected in November of 2011 to a 4-year term in Council Seat #2, which includes the Keys Gate area, he was also elected to serve as Vice-Mayor for a two-year term. He was first elected to serve as a Councilmember in 2007 and also served as Vice-Mayor from November 2007 - November 2009.

Councilman Burgess attended Western Carolina University. He has lived in South Florida for nineteen years and has called Homestead his home the past ten years. He and his wife, Charelle, have one son, who is three years old. Councilman Burgess has been a professional Coast Guard Certified Boat Captain for nearly 21 years and currently works out of Key Largo. He previously served on the City's Charter Review Committee and the Eastlake Advisory Committee.
